With these pieces, I really wanted to explore more about the terror that dwells within ambivalence -- the terror within the sublime. I wanted to translate some of the visual language that my digital work has into that of physical work.
In Katabasis, I explore these concepts through emotion, through strangeness. The uncanny, the unsettling. A reversal of roles and fortunes on one's descent towards the land of the dead -- a descent towards madness. The monstrous grin of prey turned predator.
But not all monsters are external forces of dragons or nymphs -- some dwell from within. I consider this to be a self portrait -- one of the idealized self. One marred by gender-laden etymology and pastels. A hungry, piercing gaze that glazes over the wounds others inflict, screaming out for bodily attention.
